Common and not so common items at the market — our take on “Fresh” for this week’s WordPress Photo Challenge

Our take on “FRESH” — this week’s WordPress Photo Challenge are fresh vegetables common in market stalls all around the Philippine islands, but maybe not so common in other parts of the world.

So yes, there are vegetables (and fruits) that one expects to see in practically any market stall or at farmers markets around the world like onions, garlic, tomatoes, used a base for many sauces, as well as many types of cabbage.

In the Philippine market, there are also interesting vegetables as well, like the ampalaya (known as bitter melon) and banana flowers (known as “hearts”).

Eggplant and Bittermelon

Eggplant and Bitter Melon (a common preparation for both vegetables is to cook with eggs — eggplant roasted and cooked omelet style and bitter melon scrambled with egg).

Banana as vegetable rd

Banana Hearts – the flower or unopened banana is used as a vegetable in Southeast Asian countries. It is tender and delicious when cooked, and especially tasty recipes with coconut milk.  It is astringent when raw and has to salted and prepared properly prior to cooking.

Another uniquely textured fruit, the Rambutan is native to the Indonesian islands and is related to the lychee fruit. Almost alien looking don’t you think?

Going to any market, you are sure to capture colorful and interesting colors and textures.  Do you have a favorite fresh vegetable and fruit market where you live? What do you like about it?
